People are so stressed by this election that the American Psychological Association has coping tips

Even first lady Michelle Obama is feeling it.

In an emotional speech Thursday, she shared that the Republican presidential nominee’s comments from the now infamous “Access Hollywood” video about groping women had “shaken me to my core in a way I could not have predicted.”

Weeks before The Washington Post made that 2005 video of Donald Trump public, before Trump supporters were interrupting Hillary Clinton rallies by screaming that Bill Clinton is a rapist, before Trump told Clinton to her face that she should be in jail, Americans were already seriously stressed out by this election.

In August, the American Psychological Association included a question in its annual Stress in America survey about this election. It released the results of that particular query on Thursday, and it found that more than half of U.S. adults, regardless of party, felt very or somewhat stressed by the election.

One can only imagine that what’s transpired over the past week has intensified the disgust, anxiety and disbelief felt by so many Americans.

That the election is causing anxiety in more than half the country’s population puts it in line with other major life stressors, such as the economy, money or work, said Lynn Bufka, the APA’s associate executive director for policy.

“It could be how negative the whole campaign is, the discord is particularly heated, we seem to be more polarized,” she said. “Also, we can work ourselves up over what the future president could do and if we get wrapped up in a lot of what ifs, that can make us really stressed, too.”

As we noted in another piece about the very real “Election Stress Disorder,” Americans have been expressing serious anxiety about a potential Trump or Clinton presidency as far back as January. One element of the elevated stress people feel is that these candidates in particular evoke stronger emotions than most politicians.

Not surprisingly, adults who use social media were more likely than those who don’t to say the election was bumming them out, according to the APA poll.

“One of the challenges of being active in social media is that it’s always there,” Bufka said. “The social niceties seem to slip away when we’re online, we might be bolder or blunter, or it’s more readily misinterpreted. I urge people, walk away from it, it’s okay to not be plugged in all the time.”

[Feeling anxious ahead of the debate? Here’s how to cope with ‘Election Stress Disorder.’]

Notably, the demographic feeling it the most are seniors. Close to 6 out of 10 people over 71 years old said they were stressed by this election. Millennials were the next most angst-ridden group.

“We do know that older adults typically report lower stress levels than younger generations, so it is particularly surprising to see the reverse is the case with the election,” said Vaile Wright, a Washington, D.C.-based psychologist and member of APA’s Stress in America team. “So we can only guess as to the reasons older adults might be more likely to report election stress — one possibility is that they are concerned about the future for their children and grandchildren. Another is that the issues that are particularly important to older Americans — Social Security, Medicare, prescription costs — aren’t being talked about that much by the candidates.”

But, here’s the good news. For people who are willing to address their election stress head on, there are real-life skills to be harnessed. For instance, Bufka said people can learn how to more actively set boundaries in conversations. It’s okay to tell people that you’d rather not talk about the election and change the subject, she said. Or, if they can manage to keep their cool around a co-worker with opposing political viewpoints that could carry forward to other future interactions.

[Yes, you can practice mindfulness and still stomach this presidential campaign]

The APA outlined a few more ways to manage the stress of this election. And, if none of the below helps you cope, just keep reminding yourself there’s less than four weeks to go until it’s over.

10 TIPS FOR HEALTHY SUMMER HAIR

Heyyyyy peeps!

Omg, I’m so excited for today’s post! It’s no secret that I LOVE changing up my hair style. I dye my hair whenever I’m going through a midlife crisis. I tend to get bored easily, so my hair has changed a lot throughout the years. When I was in college, I had very extremely long, dark brunette hair. When the asymmetrical bobs went into style, I decided I needed a change, so I chopped my hair off and layered the new ‘do with chunky, dramatic blonde and brunette highlights. It was super edgy and fun! I liked the change, but short hair totally wasn’t my thing. Since then, my hair has been purple, platinum blonde, and as of lately, a soft ombré. Out of all of the styles I’ve had throughout the years, the ombré is my favorite look of them all. I get the best of both worlds- being brunette AND blonde. It also looks the most natural because of my natural light brown hair.

You know. That mousy, blah, “in-between” color that you can’t really do anything with.

Or as one of my friends calls it, “deer- fur” colored hair. (Nailed it.)

Ugh. The struggle is SO real, let me tell you.

I’m SO excited to partner with Hair shampo today to share with you my healthy summer hair care tips! I’ve been a lifelong fan of Hair shampo; not only are the products great, but I love Hair shampo Real Beauty campaign that advocates for positive body image. Deciding to love ourselves and having confidence in our bodies is something that I believe all women should strive to live by!

So enough chit-chat. Here are my top tips for maintaining healthy, luscious hair during summertime!

Tip #1: Don’t wash your hair often

I try to only wash my hair twice a week. I have a friend (whose hair is beyond gorgeous, by the way) who washes her hair about once every two weeks! Washing your hair daily will strip it of its natural oils. Instead, swap out shampoo for some dry conditioner.

Tip #2: Use a repairing shampoo and conditioner

It’s no secret that my hair has become damaged throughout the years because of how many times I have colored it. Luckily, Hair shampo Intensive Repair Shampoo & Conditioner work to repair hair and stop 90% of hair damage before it happens. It leaves your hair noticeably less damaged, nourished, and manageable; perfect for the indecisive girl who is always coloring her hair! This stuff is seriously my go-to, guys. It will not disappoint you.

Tip #3: Rinse your hair before entering the pool

Uh, chlorine and blonde hair definitely don’t mix well together….I’ve learned that lesson the hard way.

Tip #4: Prevent future damage – Avoid heat styling when you don’t have to

I never style my hair unless I have a photoshoot or I have some kind of event to attend. You guys tend to only see me dolled up here on this blog, but the truth is that 99% of the time I parade around in an old t-shirt and sweat pants, rocking the messy bun and no make-up….I’m either dolled up or I’m a hot mess, there is no in-between, LOL. I don’t like damaging my hair when I know it is unnecessary. Which brings me to the next point….

Tip #5: Wear a hat

Guys, I literally live in baseball caps. Not only are they totally adorable, but hats are such an easy style to rock. Just throw on a baseball cap and be done with it!

Tip #6: Condition, condition, condition!

The biggest problem I face with my hair is that because it is so thick and long, I get SO. MANY. TANGLES, which indicates that I need to condition it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. If I don’t condition my hair, it ends up being a knotted mess that is impossible to comb through. I recommend using Dove Intensive Repair Conditioner to get the softest, most manageable hair. I also use a leave in conditioner about once a week to prevent extra tangles.

Tip #7: Get regular trim-ups, even if you’re growing your hair out

Ha! Another lesson that I had to learn the hard way. For awhile, I thought that getting monthly trims would prevent my hair from growing out. WRONG. As I’ve gotten older and wiser, I’ve learned the importance of scheduling regular trims every 6-8 weeks to ensure that my ends don’t split. When I am late on my trim, I can totally tell! I ride the struggle bus trying to come through the tangles, and my layers grow back uneven.

Tip #8: Keep your hairstyles casual

As stated before, wearing hats is one way to keep it simple. When I’m not wearing a hat, I throw my hair up in a messy bun, put it in a braid, or let my hair air-dry after I shower. I do this to prevent heat styling. However, be careful in how you casually style your hair, because sometimes messy buns can cause even more breakage then you anticipate.

Tip #9: Drink lots of water

This one’s a no-brainer. Hydration is key. Drink lots of water for best results to nourish your hair and keep it healthy.

Tip #10: Take Biotin

This is my best-kept secret. I swear by taking Biotin vitamins; I really do think they work! Not only does my hair grow crazy long when I’m taking the supplement daily, but the nutrients help keep my hair shiny and healthy. There have been periods where I took Biotin and I received compliments from friends and family immediately about how fast my hair is growing.

10 tips for a healthy breastfeeding diet

Registered dietician and Head of Discovery Vitality’s nutrition strategy Candice Smith gives advice on what moms should include in their diet while breastfeeding to produce the best-quality breast milk.

Many new moms want to know what they can eat, or should avoid eating, while breastfeeding. Others are trying to shake off their pregnancy weight at the same time, which can leave them confused about their diet.

Candice suggest the following guidelines for a healthy, balanced breastfeeding diet:

Listen to your hunger pangs

It is normal for breastfeeding moms to feel hungrier than usual as their calorie needs are slightly higher. Instead of counting calories, follow your body’s hunger as a guide. Many breastfeeding women need regular snacks throughout the day to maintain their energy levels, and as long as you’re opting for the healthy choices, you’re on the right track.

Variety is important

Eating a variety of healthy foods during breastfeeding changes the taste of breast milk and exposes your baby to new and interesting flavours, while making sure that you and your baby are getting enough essential nutrients.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is especially important during breastfeeding. Water is best, and sugary drinks and caffeine should be avoided. Drink throughout the day, and watch the colour of your urine – if it becomes dark, it’s a sign that you need to drink more.

First-class fats

Fat is an extremely important part of your own diet and an important constituent of breast milk, but not all fats are created equal. Be sure to get enough mono- and polyunsaturated fats from foods like olive oil, canola oil, oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds. Limit your intake of saturated animal fat and trans fat found in partially hydrogenated oils.

Smart selection of seafood

Seafood is a great source of protein and healthy fat, but you need to watch the mercury content as you did during pregnancy. Salmon, prawns and tuna are examples of seafood that are low in mercury. Avoid mackerel, swordfish and other seafood with higher mercury content.

Allergy awareness

Certain substances and foods may cause your baby to become irritated or develop an allergic reaction. If you suspect this might be the case, keep a food diary so you know which foods to avoid.

Avoid alcohol

Even one drink can affect your let-down reflex and if you’d like to have a drink, make sure you time it right. Alcohol from one drink takes around two to three hours to metabolise, so it’s best to feed your baby beforehand or express milk and store it for later.

Limit caffeine

Caffeine can be present in breast milk and can affect your baby’s sleep, so it’s best to limit your caffeine intake to about two cups per day, or avoid it altogether.

Vitamins are important

Breastfeeding requires an ample supply of all micronutrients. Calcium and vitamin D are particularly important. Take supplements as directed by your healthcare provider, and be sure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals you need.

How to lose weight in your 50s: 7 tips for slimming down

You’ve spent the last four decades of your life getting your metabolism and eating habits in the right shape. Now is the time to really tighten the belt (so to speak) and focus on managing a normal weight and developing a fierce disease reversal plan.

In your 50s, major shifts in hormones and habits can make losing weight a real challenge. You may also be seeing multiple doctors for various reasons, and considering natural remedies versus medication for new issues.

Regardless of the approach you choose, a good diet and an active lifestyle will go a long way. Here’s what to focus on if you want to lose weight in your 50s:

1. Spice things up

In many studies, cayenne pepper has been linked to helping increase metabolism and decrease cravings. A 2011 study revealed people who added cayenne pepper to their dishes showed a decreased amount of energy intake as well a decreased desire to consume fatty, sweet, or salty foods. If you like your food spicy, this could help you keep the weight down.

2. Be a kid again

Have you ever noticed children take forever to eat? That’s a good thing. A 2015 study found when people took 30 seconds in between bites, they stopped eating when they were no longer hungry, so they saved calories and pounds. This example of more chewing and less weight gain has been proven in several studies. We tend to consume more food than necessary as we age because emotion and stress can take over. To combat this, I suggest going back to childhood habits by using smaller plates and chewing longer. A smaller plate will make a smaller portion of food seem bigger. Focusing on slowing down your eating will help fill you up without filling you out.

3. Don’t retire from exercise

Many of my patients 50 and older come to their appointments with similar reasons for not keeping up with a workout plan. These often include some sort of joint pain, but this is not the decade to stop moving. First, assess what you can do. Then, take away the “I can’t” phrase out of your vocabulary. Swimming, walking, exercising on the elliptical machine and biking are low-impact activities. You’ll also want to focus on developing muscle mass to help preserve your metabolism. Finding a good trainer can be the first step in determining which resistance training activities will work best for you.

4. Plan ahead

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” You can wish for your 30something body back, but without strong goals and plans, it may not happen. Now more than ever, you need to focus on meal planning so you don’t rely on going out to eat all the time. I see this in a lot of my patients who are 50 and older. They don’t cook as much because their kids have grown up and moved out. Plan ahead by chopping fresh veggies on the weekend, making soups you can freeze, and having healthy convenient food options (like frozen quinoa, vegetables, and wild salmon burgers) ready in a pinch.

5. Apply a 'just a few bites' approach

Have you ever found yourself trying not to eat that piece of chocolate cake you’ve been craving all day, so you end up eating everything else in its path (and probably still eat the cake, too)? One way to enjoy some of the foods you want without reaping the negative consequences is to allow yourself a few bites. This tactic has helped many of my patients who are going on vacation or dealing with the struggle of powerful cravings.

6. Focus on quality over quantity

Straight calorie counting is not always effective because it forces you to start obsessing more about quantity rather than quality. Research already supports the notion that when comparing a higher quality whole foods diet with a standard processed food diet and calorie counting, the whole foods diet can help aid more in weight loss. Get rid of the pressure of counting every calorie.

7. Turn off the TV

Studies have found if you eat in front of the TV when it’s turned on, you may consume 13 to 25 percent more calories than if the TV was turned off. Further, a recent survey shows most Americans stop eating when their plate is empty or their TV show has ended. It may be extremely beneficial to tune into your mindful eating habits by turning off the TV and listening to your body.

Remember...
Weight loss success, at any age, is based on many different factors. After 50, these factors increase. Don’t throw in the towel, though. It’s never too late to change your lifestyle habits and find a weight that makes you happy and healthy.
